<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Literature on the adaptability and environmental processing abilities of ex-captive (rewilded) African elephants (Loxodonta africana) is sparse, emphasising the importance of this research area. By broadening our knowledge on the topic of rewilded elephant behaviour, we can generate a realistic expectation for stakeholders wanting to secure locations for these captive elephants with the aim of rewilding them. We studied 11 African elephants who have been rewilded onto various fenced reserves in South Africa. We measured their adaptability and response to their environment by comparing their behavioural frequencies within four categories and their physiological responses (faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) concentrations), to those observed for free-roaming elephants in South Africa. All study animals were grouped into three age/sex categories (Adult females (AF); Adult males (AM); Sub-adult females (SAF)). The results demonstrated that rewilded elephants expressed similar behavioural frequencies to their wild counterparts, except within the “Attentive” category, where both rewilded AMs and SAFs showed significantly lower frequencies than wild elephants. On the contrary, rewilded AFs and SAFs had comparatively higher fGCM concentrations than wild elephants. Through individual comparisons, it was evident that rewilded elephants have adopted unique mechanisms to process environmental stimuli. When the relationship between behavioural and physiological responses was investigated, certain rewilded elephants showed a strong relationship between the two parameters. However, for other elephants, there was no clear correlation between behavioural frequencies and fGCM concentrations. These distinctive differences might largely be influenced by personality traits that will determine whether the elephants respond actively or passively to their environment. This study has shown that rewilded elephants can adapt to wild environments after long-term captivity and that each of them implemented unique ways of coping with both natural and management-related pressures in the different reserves.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fenced reserves are widely used to conserve and manage African savanna elephants (<em>Loxodonta africana</em>) in South Africa. However, the effects of fencing and fence removal on elephant wellbeing, movement and ecosystem dynamics remain limited in understanding, with few studies incorporating these elements. We hypothesised that fence removal would increase elephant movement flexibility and range, reduce behavioural disturbance and increase sociality, reduce stress-related biomarkers and redistribute browsing pressure. We evaluated how a resident elephant population in a private reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, responded to the removal of two internal fences by integrating focal behavioural observations, faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) analyses, NDVI-based vegetation assessments and GPS collar data collected before and after fence removal. Fence removal increased home-range extent, seasonal mobility and inter-herd spatial overlap, with elephants incorporating newly accessible habitat at variable rates. Initial movement was towards lower density environments during the exploratory phase, with greater distribution in space utilisation over time. Behavioural responses indicated short-term increases in aggression, vigilance and disturbance-related behaviours immediately after fence removal, followed by stabilisation, reduced aggression and increased affiliative behaviour over time. Activity budgets shifted towards increased locomotion and reduced foraging, consistent with exploratory behaviour. fGCM concentrations declined significantly following fence removal and remained significant after accounting for demographic and environmental variables, suggesting reduced physiological stress. Vegetation dynamics were spatially heterogeneous yet comparable between areas of elephant presence and absence. This suggests that expanded access redistributed browsing pressure without causing disproportionate vegetation loss with vegetation change primarily driven by environmental variability and not elephant access. These findings suggest that fence removal can promote more natural movement, behavioural responses and physiological regulation, while maintaining vegetation dynamics consistent with background climatic variability. Fence removal may therefore provide an alternative or complementary approach to population management by alleviating spatial constraints and redistributing ecological pressure across the landscape.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In March, we launched our first data collection session at Pilanesberg National Park, focusing on the interactions between elephants, tourist vehicles, and wildlife guides. This forms part of a broader study that will also include Kruger National Park and Addo Elephant National Park. As the first research of its kind, we are excited about the opportunity to help bridge the gap between tourists and elephants.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is increasing evidence of compromised welfare for captive African savannah elephants managed in confined spaces. With the trend for zoos and captive facilities to close due to public pressure, reflecting ethical concerns,&nbsp; and thier limited capacity to manage &#8216;difficult&#8217;&nbsp; behaviours, elephants will continue to require rehabilitation into free-ranging areas or living in the wild. During reintegration from captivity into a free-roaming system, conservation management methods need to be carefully considered to ensure the individual’s welfare. Elephants,&nbsp; have a sophisticated social life and exhibit complex body language employing a multitude of behavioural signals and gestures to demonstrate thier needs and feelings. These detailed signals could be valuable when assessing the welfare status of elephants as any large deviation in behaviour could indicate changes in elephant wellbeing. In this study,&nbsp; a group of African elephants (<em>Loxodonta africana</em>) were monitored as they transitioned from captivity to a free-roaming system. To track the impact of reintegration on elephant welfare, we recorded&nbsp; frequencies of behaviours categorized as Ambivalent, Assessing, Frustrated, and Social, and ofspecific&nbsp; behaviours within each category, across four phases of reintegration into the wild (Stables, Boma, Release and Free). Significant differences in rates between reintegration phases were observed for several categories of behaviour and specific behaviours. Decreased&nbsp; frequencies of Frustrated behaviours and an increase in social behaviours when the elephants were Free were potentially indicative of improved welfare in wild settings. We conclude that monitoring of&nbsp; behaviours is important when assessing elephant welfare, and to establish the success of reintegration operations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the 10th of October, Brett and Tenisha presented on the rewilding of 17 African elephants that occurred in 2015 and 2016. ​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​The conference provided an opportunity to highlight some valuable findings that we have noted over the last 5 years of studying these elephants. Some key observations including that all stereotypic behaviours ceased, once the elephants were released into a wild system. We also observed lower frequencies of frustrated behaviour after the elephants were released. ​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to debunk the beliefs that elephants can thrive in captivity and that they can’t adapt to a novel environment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the escalating challenges in captive elephant management, the study of elephant reintegration emerges as a pivotal area of research, primarily addressing the enhancement of animal welfare. The term ‘reintegration’ refers to the process of rehabilitating captive elephants to a natural system, allowing them to roam freely without intensive human intervention. There is a relative paucity of research addressing the behavioural adaptations post-reintegration, despite reintegration of over 20 elephants across various fenced reserves in South Africa. Our study centres on two distinct herds of reintegrated African elephants, monitoring their movement patterns in two South African reserves over a 57-month period post-release. The primary goal of the study was to establish whether the flexibility and adaptability of movement behaviour of reintegrated elephants can be considered as one of the indicators of determining the success of such an operation. The second aim of our study was to investigate if the reintegrated elephants demonstrated an adaptability to their environment through their hourly, daily, and seasonal ranging patterns after a period of free roaming that exceeded 4 years. Our findings indicated that reintegrated elephants, much like their wild counterparts (movement based on literature), displayed notable seasonal and diurnal variations in key movement parameters, such as utilisation distribution areas and reserve utilization. These patterns changed over time, reflecting an adaptive shift in movement patterns after several years of free roaming. Notably, the trajectory of changes in movement parameters varied between herds, indicating unique adaptation responses, likely resulting from differences in the reintegration process (familiarity of reserve, season of release, presence of wild elephants). Although our study is constrained by the limited number of reintegrated herds available for analysis, it underscores the potential of captive elephants to successfully adapt to a free-living environment, emphasising the promising implications of reintegration initiatives.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Excitedly, we’re researching a new elephant population on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SibuyaGameReserve?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZVrKVS_buaKM2dwITdFG-4CFOIP5CnpWOCMMn5f-fGlHaK8E-ZJ18huv8iv8zxrx_TC4uykyZMJ7_oknDSqq57sio0r_P4XQQ5ZFMdSfjUUZE_axkVFszg3rPdDvjpbv7opyphRr3-YDtRNOPLAEZvDJTyKMb3xrFFErruzPd7jHRIErnxhT07yL8w-d1WULnM&amp;__tn__=-%5dK-R" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sibuya Game Reserve</a> in the Eastern Cape Province. Many thanks to the Conservation &amp; Volunteer team at Sibuya, who have gone out of their way to assist us with kicking off our fieldwork by showing us the reserve, and where the elephants&#8217; favourite spots are. ​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​The data we are collecting here will contribute greatly towards our Greater Welfare Research Project, supported by Humane World for Animals.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​Within our first&nbsp;week, we were discovering, at first glance, never-before-seen behaviours and are looking forward to starting to decipher the unique behavioural culture of this population. Since commencing our Greater Welfare Research Project in 2019, each of our research elephant populations we’re studying have displayed different behaviours as a way of communicating with one another and the humans they encounter.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This project will form part of the building blocks of a PhD project focusing on the effect of large impact events on the epigenome of African elephants.​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Epigenetics is the study of how gene activity is regulated without changing the DNA sequence itself. Epigenetic changes affect when, where, and how strongly genes are expressed. These changes can be temporary or long-lasting, and some can even be passed down to offspring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Currently direct evidence of epigenetic changes in African elephants due to major life events is lacking and existing research underscores the significant impact of environmental and social stressors on their physiology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Stress Detection<br></strong>Chronic stress (e.g., from poaching, captivity, or habitat disruption) may lead to epigenetic changes in genes linked to immune function, growth, and reproduction. If we can detect these changes we can monitor how environmental stress impacts health and it may help identify individuals or populations at risk before physical symptoms appear.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Understanding Long-Term Effects of Trauma<em><br></em></strong>Events like losing a matriarch or being orphaned may leave epigenetic &#8220;scars&#8221; that influence behaviour, stress levels, or even fertility. Understanding this helps improve management in fenced systems (e.g., better social structures) as well as informing strategies to rehabilitate traumatized wild elephants.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Adaptation &amp; Resilience<br></strong>Epigenetic studies may reveal how elephants adapt (or fail to adapt) to changing environments. This can guide translocation efforts (moving elephants to new areas) and even climate resilience strategies (e.g., how heat or drought impacts long-term health).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​The first aim of this project is to develop a cost-effective method of DNA extraction from three sample types (i.e., blood, skin and dung) to obtain DNA of the highest quantity and quality for Oxford Nanopore (ONT) long-read sequencing.​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">​The second aim is to develop a non-invasive method where dung samples could be utilized as a substitute for invasive blood samples.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the purposes of testing the impacts of habitat expansion on elephant movement, six XL LoRa elephant radio collars were fixed on three adult male elephants and three adult female elephants prior to a fence being removed at Kariega Game Reserve, South Africa. While none of the collars on female elephants twisted, within five months, all the male elephant collars had twisted, with some triple and double twisting. Behavioural monitoring revealed indications of irritation that resulted in the removal and/or replacement of all twisted collars. It was discovered that two of the male elephants had developed wounds underneath their twisted collars, therefore, only one elephant was re-collared, with a collar that was modified to minimize further risk of twisting, however it twisted again. To investigate this rare incidence of elevated collar twisting, our study assessed the following: elephant behaviour to guide decision-making around interventions and well-being; when, where and how these incidents occurred to investigate the mechanism of twisting and the likelihood of human error; collar design and refurbishment to develop recommendations to minimize the likelihood of twisting; and data obtained from organizations using elephant collars for comparison. From this, it was theorized that browsing behaviour in bulls in dense vegetation, and inadequate collar design were the likely causes in twisting occurrence. We urge organizations using LoRa elephant collars to emphasize post-application monitoring, and exercise caution, when attaching on bulls in dense vegetation. We encourage collar manufacturers to thoroughly investigate twisting incidents and adjust collar structures accordingly, and inform clients about the possibility of twisting. By addressing these issues, we can better ensure the well-being of elephants, research success, and improved device safety and efficacy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is increasing evidence of compromised welfare for elephants managed in captivity. Should such facilities eventually close, more elephants will need to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into the wild. The goal of such reintegration would be to restore any physical or psychological aspects of the elephant that may have been compromised in captivity, followed by introduction into a free-roaming system where they can interact with other elephants. However, to achieve this goal, the reintegration methods implemented need to be assessed to ensure that welfare remains the priority. The objective of this study was to test whether parameters generally associated with stress and disturbance in African elephants, respond to changes in potentially stressful environmental conditions, assessed at multiple temporal scales ranging from minutes to months. The main changes in environmental conditions that were investigated included the different phases of reintegration of a group of elephants from captivity into the wild. Stress and disturbance related parameters used for comparisons included physiological responses, namely the extent of temporal gland secretions (eTGS) and faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) levels as well as behavioural responses, namely the display of stereotype and stress-related behaviours. Results showed that eTGS significantly increased during the initial release of the elephants compared to when in captivity. Stereotypic behaviours were only recorded during the captive phase and immediately ceased after release. Faecal GCM levels spiked in the first year after release before decreasing back to pre-reintegration levels during the third year. These findings indicate that fGCM levels, the eTGS and disturbance related behaviours all proved effective in explaining the changes in stress and disturbance experienced by elephants during the initial years after being reintegrated from captivity into the wild.</p>
