Collared Mana and Sharu

August 1, 2021

Elephants are moved from one reserve to another for various reasons. Sometimes it is to increase or decrease population numbers & sometimes it is to balance & improve the social structures in certain systems.

When elephants are introduced to new reserves it’s important to understand the effects this has on their behaviour & movement in their new environments. Additionally, it is just as important to monitor how the introduction of new elephants affects the movement & behaviour of any resident elephants.

Here we collared two resident bulls on a reserve ahead of the planned introduction of some more bulls that are needed in this system. This will give us great baseline data to compare changes to, once these future introductions are made & we continue to monitor the population!
