Rewilding

Returning elephants in captivity to the wild to roam free

OUR BELIEF

Full reintegration back into a wild system is an ethical and humane management strategy for current captive elephants.

We believe that elephants should be on land where they can roam without interference, free to choose where to go and whom to associate with; to enjoy the luxury of a river, open space and dense vegetation. A place free from human control and exploitation.

OUR VISION

Develop a reserve that is a safe haven for elephants in South Africa

Our vision is to provide a secure wild environment for retired, commercially used elephants from various captive backgrounds, including abused and compromised elephants. These elephants will be reintegrated back into the wild where they can live out their remaining years, with dignity, as free elephants; or where necessary receive care and recover from the negative impact of captivity.

The Process of Rewilding

Rehabilitation

Treatment and care of an injured, orphaned, or sick elephant to become physically fit for the next step.

Reintegration

The process of humans disengaging from intensive management. Reinstating autonomy with full freedom of choice.

Rewilding

The release of reintegrated elephants into a wild system without any further interference by humans.

Rewildings we’ve been involved in

We have reintegrated over 17 elephants with the goal of ensuring the remaining 90 that are currently captive, are rewilded. Here are a few of the reintegrations we have completed.

We need your help to achieve our vision and create our reserve.

Any and all contributions are deeply appreciated.
