ERT Chairman Brett Mitchell delivered a presentation on the rewilding of elephants in South Africa. He provided insights into the captive elephant industry, including common sources of captive elephants. Brett introduced the framework of the three R’s (rehabilitation, reintegration, and rewilding) before sharing the reintegration and rewilding journeys of two separate groups of ex-captive African elephants, totalling 15 individuals. His presentation detailed the elephants’ backgrounds, the motivations behind their rewilding, and the anticipated improvements to their quality of life. Each group’s reintegration process was explored in depth, along with the key lessons learned—valuable insights that now inform ERT’s approach to future reintegration efforts
